Custom Chelating Agents
for Radioisotopes
To incorporate a radioisotope into a radiopharmaceutical that targets cancer cells, a molecule known as a chelating agent must bind to the correct radioisotope and keep it connected to the targeting molecule that recognizes cancer cells. These chelating agents must:
Bind the radioisotope selectively
to ensure purity and therefore
safety of the drug
Bind the radioisotope strongly to prevent it from
being released and damaging healthy cells
elsewhere in the body
