Chelating Agents for Radioisotopes
Chelating agents such as DOTA, DOTEM and TCMC are often used to radiolabel targeting molecules for cancer therapy. These common chelating agents can bind beta-emitting radioisotopes well enough to deliver the radiation to the targeted cancer cells but they are much less effective at binding more potent alpha-emitting radioisotopes. When an alpha-particle is emitted, the “re-coil effect” can dislodge the radioisotope from the chelator and cause off-target toxicity.
RadSep can develop custom chelators for a wide range of medical radionuclides, including alpha emitters such as Ac-225 and Pb-212.
Due to their structure, these innovative chelating agents for radioisotopes promise a significant improvement over conventional chelators such as DOTA, DOTEM, and TCMC, including:
- Strong binding constants in vivo
- Superior radiolytic and chemical stability

For example, BOBCalixC6 has been used at the U.S. DOE Savannah River Site to selectively recover Cs-137 from salt waste at a level greater than 99.9975%. This remarkable recovery rate has been achieved despite high levels of competing ions, such as sodium, being present in solution.
